It’s strongly advised not to vape while getting a tattoo. Here’s why, broken down by the real risks:

Infection control – Tattoo studios are required to maintain a sterile field. Exhaled vapour introduces moisture, particles, and potential bacteria into the air, which can settle on the open wound or equipment.
Nicotine & blood flow – Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor; it narrows blood vessels, reduces circulation to the skin, and can slow healing. It may also increase bleeding during the session, making it harder for the artist to see the lines.
Distraction & movement – Vaping involves hand-to-mouth repetition, and any sudden movement (coughing, reaching for the device) can jolt the artist while they’re working on a permanent piece.
Studio policy – Most reputable tattoo shops prohibit any kind of smoking or vaping indoors, as it’s both a hygiene and fire-safety issue. You risk being asked to leave.
The safer approach: wait until the session is completely finished and the tattoo is wrapped. If you’re concerned about comfort during long sessions, talk to your artist about scheduled breaks where you can step outside.
